Are you looking for some patriotic fashion idea for the Fourth of July? Well here’s one tutorial you don’t want to miss! We are turning a patriotic 2X shirt into a cropped hoodie with cut out shoulders. So without further ado gear up and let’s start our engines. Ready, Set, Sew!
You’ll need:
A too large for you T-shirt
Scissors
Tailors Chalk
Pins
Lace (optional)
Coordinating Thread
Sewing Machine
Step 1: Cut off the bottom of the shirt leaving enough room for the hood. I cut off 12 inches.
Step 2: Cut the neckband off. Make sure to remove uneven edges.
Step 3: Taking the bottom of the shirt, draw a hoodie shape. If you have a hooded jacket or a hooded shirt, you can use it as a pattern.
Step 4: Cut it out leaving a half inch seam allowance, pin them right sides together and sew along the pin lines.
Step 5: Find the center back of your shirt and match it with the center back seam of the hood then sew it in place.
Step 6: Hem the neckline
Step 7: Try the shirt on and determine how much you want to take in on the sleeves and the sides. Then lay the shirt flat on the ground and pin in place or mark it with a chalk. Then sew from the sleeve hem to the shirt hem with a straight stitch. Trim the seam allowance.
Your shirt will look like this…
Step 8: Create cut outs in the shoulders. Put your shirt on and draw circles on both of the shoulder part of the sleeves
Step 10: When you’re happy with the cut out take it to your machine and hem around the circles.
now it will look like this…
You’re actually done right now but I experimented the shirt placing some lace at the bottom and it looks like this…
if you like this look here’s how I did i t…
Step 11: Measure the bottom of the shirt multiply it by 2 plus seam allowance. Take that measurement to measure the amount of the lace you’ll need. Sew them on top of the shirt by placing its raw edges to the raw edges of the shirt then top stitch it.
and you’re done!
Here are the before photos…
Here’s the after
When my husband came home from work he said it’s better with a waistband from the leftovers rather than the lace on…
